Program History:

The integrated circuit (IC) industry serves as a strategic, fundamental and pioneering industry supporting economic and social development and safeguarding national security. The IC Design and Integrated Systems program is one of the core majors prioritized for development in China. Officially approved for establishment in 2020, the program began admitting undergraduate students in 2021. Leveraging high-quality teaching and research platforms such as the National Defense Characteristic Discipline of Electronic Components (Ministry of Education), the Master’s Degree Program in Electronic Information (IC Engineering), and the Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Smart Sensors and New Sensing Materials, the program has established an integrated "Bachelor–Master" talent training system. Aligned with the evolving landscape of the IC industry and focusing on the core domains of chip design and system integration, the program has become an important base for IC talent training in Hunan Province, providing solid talent support for national and regional industrial advancement.

Program Features:

(1) The training model emphasizes the organic integration of theoretical teaching and engineering practice, knowledge imparting and innovation ability cultivation, and integrates foreign language application and international vision cultivation throughout the whole training process, forming a “three-in-one” interdisciplinary talent training system.

(2) he knowledge system highlights the cultivation of core abilities in IC chip design and system development. Based in Hunan, facing the whole country, the program serves strategic emerging fields such as microelectronics technology, IC design, electronic system integration, intelligent manufacturing and artificial intelligence.

(3) A multi-dimensional and open practical teaching system has been established, centered on high-level professional laboratories. Through project-based teaching, on-the-job internships in enterprises, discipline competitions and other forms, the pertinence and effectiveness of experimental and practical teaching are improved.

Educational Objectives:

This program cultivates interdisciplinary engineering and technical professionals with a broad foundation, strong abilities, high quality, innovative awareness and practical abilities. Graduates should master the basic theories, core technologies and engineering methods of IC design and integrated systems, and possess the basic literacy of IC engineers. They can engage in scientific research, chip design, system integration, process development, testing and packaging, technical management and other work in fields such as integrated circuits, electronic information, national defense and military industries. They can solve complex engineering problems in the IC field, and possess good professional ethics and awareness of lifelong learning.

Faculty:

There are currently 14 full-time teachers in the program, including 3 professors, 4 associate professors and 7 lecturers; 14 teachers have doctoral degrees, accounting for 100% of the total number of teachers, with an excellent educational background structure. The faculty team includes 1 Xiangjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor, 1 “Furong Scholar Leading Talent” of Hunan Province, 2 Xiangjiang Scholar Distinguished Associate Professors, 3 Excellent Young Teachers in Teaching of Hunan Province, 3 Special Experts in Science and Technology of Hunan Province, and 1 Top-notch Talent in Emerging Industrialization of Xiangtan City.

In the past three years, the faculty has presided over more than 10 projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, national defense and military projects, and civil-military integration projects. A well-structured teaching and research team with a combination of senior, middle-aged and young teachers and balanced professional directions has been formed in the fields of IC design, semiconductor materials, intelligent information processing, etc.

Career Prospects:

As a national strategic emerging major, this program meets the needs of industrial development, the talent gap continues to expand, and the employment situation is positive. The employment rate of the first batch of graduates exceeds 95%. Graduates are mainly employed in government organs, high-tech enterprises, national defense and military enterprises, engaged in chip design, system integration, process research and development, testing and verification, technical management and other work.
